Oregon Council for the Humanities and Reed College begin ninth year of partnership in free college-level humanities course.

Humanity in Perspective (HIP), a free, two-semester, college-level course in the humanities for low-income adults in Portland offered by the Oregon Council for the Humanities (OCH) and Reed College, is accepting applications for the 2009-10 year until Friday, July 24, 2009.
Applications are available for download on the OCH website (oregonhumanities.org) or by request from Sarah Van Winkle, OCH Program Coordinator, at (503) 241-0543, ext. 112. Applicants can apply directly and are also referred by agencies serving low-income adults and families.
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, able to speak and write fluently in English, and willing to commit to attending class two evenings per week during the seven-month program.... More

Immigration remains one of the most complex and potentially divisive issues the United States and the Northwest face today, with economic, social, cultural, and political questions that transform how communities interact. This issue is the focus of a free public panel sponsored by the Oregon Council for the Humanities in partnership with the American Leadership Forum.
“The Unfinished Nation: Dilemmas and Decisions on Immigration Reform” will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at 7:30 p.m., at the Southern Oregon University Lenn and Dixie Hannon Library Meese Room 305, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland.

President Obama Nominates James Leach Chair of National Endowment for the Humanities

President Barack Obama has nominated James Leach, an Iowa Congressman and university professor with a long and distinguished career, as the next chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Oregon Council for the Humanities (OCH), an independent, nonprofit affiliate of the NEH, joins the NEH and the Federation of State Humanities Councils in enthusiastically endorsing the president’s decision.

James Leach has served as Chair of the House Committee on Banking and Financial Services, a senior member of the House Committee on International Relations, and Chair of the Committee’s Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Affairs.
