Consider This: Humans, Land, and Animals

Join us at 7:00 p.m. on May 22 at Pendleton Center for the Arts for a conversation with Bobby Fossek, Erica Berry, and Wendy Bingham about living in community with animals and plants. Some animals and plants are welcomed by people, and others we reject or try to eradicate. How do we decide which living things belong, and what do these decisions show about our place on the land?

This live, onstage conversation is part of Oregon Humanities’ 2023–24 Consider This series, Fear and Belonging. To participate, please register here.

7:00 p.m., Pendleton Center for the Arts, Pendleton

So Much Together: As Often as the Bold: Fear, Community, Movement, and Change

Fear is central to our human experience, a powerful force that extends beyond our individual lives into political and cultural realms. In an uncertain world, the opportunities for fear to take root and spread are infinite. In this So Much Together workshop, we take a non-judgmental approach to fear, viewing it not as our enemy—but as a catalyst for self-discovery and transformation.

12:30 to 3:30 p.m., optional social time from 12:00-12:30 and 3:30-4:00 p.m., Historic Alberta House, Portland

Conversation Project: Does Nature Have a Purpose?

Oregonians have long struggled to balance cultural, political, and values-based differences tied to our use of land and resources. As we enter an age of accelerating environmental change and scarcity, it is important to understand what drives these differences. In this conversation we will explore our attitudes and assumptions about the purpose of the environment in our lives and how those attitudes and assumptions shape our perception of environmental issues and policies.

RSVP for this free event.

So Much Together: Singing Our Traditions to Life: Music, Memory, and Migration

We all have a particular lineage, a continuing story connecting us across centuries to ancestors, land, and traditions. But what does it really mean to be from a place, from a heritage? In this So Much Together workshop, we'll deepen our sense of cultural heritage and/or identity, while engaging in thoughtful dialogue about how these might impact our roles and responsibilities as residents of our current communities.

12:30 to 1:00 p.m. (optional social time); 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Shaw Historical Library, Klamath Falls
